What do you teach at SMS? Band
How many years teaching at SMS? 2
What is your favorite thing about teaching? I enjoy seeing students get excited about band and music the way many people do about sports or other hobbies.
Hobbies & Special Interests: I love playing and watching sports. Most people just think I’m a big “band geek” because that’s what I teach, but I was actually a decent football, basketball, and baseball player in high school. I just quit playing in because I knew music could take me further than sports.
What type of music do you listen to? Honestly everything but my favorites are 80’s and country
Favorite food(s) anything Italian
Pets: 2 cats
What is your favorite thing to learn about? I’m pretty big into new technology. I also like music and sports of course.
Why did you start running? I used to not like running but did it just to stay in shape, but running is one of those things that the more you do it the more you WANT to do it.
What do you hope to gain from this trip? The thing that grabbed my attention from the start was to motivate kids to read and run by choice and not because they had to. Being able to do that, in addition to educating our students about Chinese culture, is an awesome thing.
What are the five coolest things you have ever done? Drove across the Golden Gate Bridge, went to New Orleans (very cool place), played in the Virginia Tech Drumline for 4 years, shook hands with NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Smith, placed 4th in the state of Virginia as a senior percussionist at Fort Defiance High School.

What do you teach at SMS? READING!
How many years teaching at SMS? 3 (18 years at the awesome Hugh K. Cassell Elementary School!)
What is your favorite thing about teaching? The fact that something I say or do will be remembered by someone years down the road and I won’t recall the situation at all. The need to be creative and to change things up to meet the students where they are…
Hobbies & Special Interests: Photography, cooking, hiking,
What type of music do you listen to? Everything from Rascal Flatts to James Taylor, Luther VanDross, Group 1 Crew to Manhattan Steamroller

Children/Pets: Heidi (17), Abby (15), Christian (7) Ben (5) and Reese, a Chocolate Lab,

What is your favorite thing to learn about? People
What are the five coolest things you have ever done?
hmm that's tough
*Marry my high school sweetheart and have 4 wonderful and active children
*Teach 8th grade Extensions with Mrs. Sheets! Those kids are awesome!
*Actually complete the Monument 10k
*I can't think of just one more...Life is just an amazing jigsaw of adventures that I struggle with having a top 5!
When did you start running? Two weeks ago! I’m just the tech person…seriously I wasn’t planning to run. I was to be the “documenter” of the trip, responsible for getting pictures and information back to America! Then everyone was talking about running here and running there and well, I felt a little left out!  I just completed my first 10k in April and was absolutely amazed at how much I enjoyed it. I am pretty sure it will happen again- the t-shirts are really cool!
What do you hope to gain from this trip? I really have never been anywhere beyond the Eastern United States and even that travel is almost limited to the Outer Banks. Having read a bunch of books about other people, cultures and lands, I am ready to see the things that I have visualized. I intend to bring a wealth of information to my students and family that includes a better appreciation for what America has to offer that I confess to taking for granted. And did I mention courage?
