Why did you start running? In June of 2006, I was 215 pounds with skinny little legs and skinny little arms and a big ole belly! I felt horrible. SO I signed up for a ½ marathon on Labor Day. I knew it would kill me if I didn’t train. I lost 43 pounds for that race. I keep signing up for races because I am not someone who will run just to run. I love the positive energy I get from the crowd. Races are held at really cool places like the beach, The Great Wall of China…very cool!
What do you hope to gain from this trip? Besides running a race on the Great Wall, which is totally awesome, I want to introduce our kids to China. Our students will forever deal with the Chinese, so let’s get to know them. Also if there is something I can bring back from the Chinese schools we visit that will make SMS a better school, then that needs to happen.

Mr. Roberts says...
How do you get a school full of middle school students to read lots of books and participate in fitness activities? Answer: Get a group of teachers to run in a marathon on the Great Wall in China.
To support this endeavor, the students of S.G. Stewart Middle School are reading books, writing a summary of their book on a yellow brick, which is then used to create the “SMS Great Wall to China.” The students set a goal of 4000 books, and they are well on their way to accomplishing this goal (1500 books read since Thanksgiving). We all know that reading is fun. It’s even more fun when it goes to support such a wonderful opportunity for our school community!
The students are also improving their fitness by walking or running around the globe two times (not literally of course). Many students get their day started with hearty laps around the school’s fitness trail, dedicate laps during PE class, or exercise with their families at home. The miles are logged daily so the students can see “where in the world” they are. Of the 50,000 miles required to loop the globe two times, the students are currently at 30,000 miles. Can you believe it! Who would have thought that fitness could be so fun?
As the Principal of Stewart Middle School, I encourage everyone in the Stewart Middle School community to support this program. What a wonderful learning opportunity this is for our students!
